Description:

A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) engineer responsibilities include but not limited to generation of analytical and physics based substantiation of flow characteristics in static and rotating cavities, pipes, accessories, engine flow path and external environment, and work in concert with GE heat transfer and design engineers. The CFD engineer is responsible to generate grids for both two-dimensional and three dimensional geometries, create simulation models, perform analysis to obtain relevant flow variables, perform post-processing of CFD simulations to provide design guidance, present and defend analytical and test substantiated results to the Thermal Sciences consulting engineer and General Electric’s Chief Consulting engineer.

Career Paths:

Applied physics...

  • ... is the traditional pathway to specialise in physics related areas including condensed matter, plasma and optical physics

  • ... can lead you to many graduate-level engineering programmes.

  • ... gives you superb preparation for a wide range of positions in university, government and industrial organisations due to its highly customisable course which can allow you to diversely apply your knowledge.

  • ... is great preparation for careers in blossoming technological sectors such as energy and nanotechnology.

  • ... is very well suited for any career requiring strong experimental and/or theoretical and/or calculation skills.

  • ... provides a very desirable pathway to careers in finance.

Careers with CFD can lead to several job segments including: Thermal enigneering, consulting, research, R&D enigneering (research and development) avaiation, engineering and technology.

Education:

For a job in fluid dynmaics community, the qualifications are as followed:

MSc with specialisation in computational fluid dynamics. Experience in flow solver and grid generation code developement. Fluency in CFX (language used in fluid dynamics) and graduate course should cover part or most of the incompressable and compressible fluid mecahnics, gas dynamics and numerical analysis topics.

A PhD in CFD (computational fluid dynamics) is highly desired with experience in high speed computing, aircraft engines or related fields. Knoweledge of conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer is highly advantageous.

Average salary:

The average salary for fluid dynamics physics jobs is £39,652. Average fluid dynamics physics salaries can vary greatly due to company, location, industry, experience and benefits.
